The History of Artificial Intelligence The history of artificial intelligence (AI) dates back to antiquity, with myths, stories, and rumors of artificial beings endowed with intelligence or consciousness by master craftsmen. However, the modern field of AI is generally considered to have begun in the 1950s, with the development of the first AI programs. One of the earliest AI programs was Logic Theorist, developed by Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon at Carnegie Mellon University in 1955. Logic Theorist was a theorem-proving program that could prove theorems in logic. Another early AI program was ELIZA, developed by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT in 1966. ELIZA was a natural language processing program that could simulate a psychotherapist. In the 1970s and 1980s, AI research focused on the development of rule-based systems.
